Dealing with low impact role?

I have been working in a role that is a mix of analytics and data engineering. I am running into issue where the impact of what I am doing is unclear and I am not having the impacts and results that I wanted. The main purpose of the group was to fulfill regulatory mandate/work but with the changes in administration (USA) that work is no longer as important. The pay is decent but the work environment is no longer where I want to be. The issue that I am running into is I am spending my time on something that is not really going anywhere. I am building some technical skills but that is about it a
