What is the purpose of “Connection type” in Fabric Copy Activity?

When creating a Copy Activity for a database source, Fabric asks for the connection type, for example Azure SQL Database, SQL Server, MySQL, etc. What impact does this actually have on how the data is read? Is Fabric simply using it to choose the correct connector/driver, or does the connection type also determine how source data types are detected and converted?
